In 2002, he holds a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) of painting at the Wisconsin Madison University and in 2008 a MFA (Master of Fine Arts) at Hunter College of New York. His works have been exhibited worldwide: David Zwirner, Deitch Projects and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. They are part of prestigious private and public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), the Milwaukee Art Museum (WI), the Deste Foundation Collection in Athens, etc. Evan gruzis works with different galleries: Hole in New York, Duve in Berlin, Saks in Geneva. He also teaches painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Evan Gruzis explores the psychological and spiritual aspects of the visual culture of the 80’s, Pop Art aesthetics, the Memphis Group, New Wave album covers, adding Hollywood-style beauty references: palm trees, sunsets, Ray-Ban sunglasses. By combining textile dye and acrylic paint, he develops his own technic. Inspired by Dogen Zenji, a Japanese Zen Buddhist master, the artist plays with light, the fluidity of the material and the artificiality of the colors in order to reveal a psychological area. The frame is essential within these abstract works, dissolving tensions between the inside and the outside, chaos and moderation, and opening a window onto meditation.

En 2002, il obtient son BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) de peinture à l’université de Wisconsin Madison et en 2008 son MFA (Master of Fine Arts) au Hunter College de New York. Ses oeuvres ont été exposées dans le monde entier, chez David Zwirner, au Deitch Projects et au musée d’art contemporain de Rome. Elles font partie de prestigieuses collections privées et publiques, dont celle du Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), le Milwaukee Art Museum (WI), la Deste Foundation Collection à Athènes, etc. Evan gruzis est affilié à plusieurs galeries, Hole à New-York, Duve à Berlin, Saks à Genève. Il est également professeur de peinture à l'école de l'Art Institute de Chicago.

Evan Gruzis explore les aspects psychologiques et spirituels de la culture visuelle des années 80’s, de l’esthétique Pop art, du groupe de Memphis, des couvertures d’albums New Wave, auxquels s’allie une beauté kitch hollywoodienne : palmiers, couchers de soleil, lunettes Ray-Ban. Combinant teintures pour textiles et peinture acrylique, il développe une technique qui lui est propre. Inspiré par Dogen Zenji, maître du bouddhisme zen japonais, l’artiste manie la lumière, la fluidité des matériaux et l’artificialité des couleurs pour activer un espace psychologique. Dans ses oeuvres abstraites, le cadre joue également un rôle essentiel et dissout les tensions entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur, le chaos et la mesure, en ouvrant une fenêtre sur la méditation.
