Steven COX - No Lemons No Melon (solo show)
940 N Oak Park Avenue
OPENING: 6 may 2018
PRACTISE is thrilled to present No Lemons No Melon, an exhibition of new work by Steven Cox. No Lemons No Melon consists of a recent series of abstract paintings that reflect the artist’s continued exploration of gesture, paint transferal and layering.
The title of the exhibition, a palindrome, plays on the action of reading a gesture and process both forwards and backwards. Like the paintings within the exhibition, the works are constructed through the repetitive layering of oil paint, each layer mirroring the structure of the one beneath. The works examine notions of reflection, whilst the transferal of paint results in the creation of subtle lines and crevices reminiscent of rough urban surfaces.
Mimicking the structure of decaying walls, ripped posters and flaking paint, his paintings are poetic reinterpretations of the artist’s surroundings. Cox paints directly onto sheets of plastic, and in a mono-print like manner transfers each layer onto the canvas surface. Slowly, the paintings evolve amassing structure and weight that indicate the passing of time. Free from personal expression, the paint, plastic, and physical pulling action determines the canvases organic structure. Building on the vast history of abstraction, Cox’s new paintings ask how process and perception align in a visual world built on a dynamic marriage of vastness and flatness.
Born in 1986, Steven Cox lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. He received his MA from Edinburgh College of Art, and his BA from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. He has had numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, most recently at Galerie Jerome Pauchant, Paris (2017), Halsey McKay Gallery, New York, (2017), Annarumma Gallery, Naples (2016), Galleri Benoni, Copenhagen (2016) among others. He has participated in numerous international group exhibitions and residencies.
PRACTISE is an independently run artist-centered exhibition space located in Oak Park, IL directed by artist and educator Zachary Buchner. Acknowledging a long tradition of alternative spaces in Oak Park and Chicago, our goal is to continue this lineage of community and discourse.
